Keep the Faith

Faithless, the World’s biggest dance act, headline the L.I.V.E concert in Marbella this month. Hot Marbella spoke exclusively to Sister Bliss the day after their storming set at the Glastonbury Festival.
Faithless have always been at the forefront of the International Dance Scene and for the first time in southern Spain the British collective’s central trio of Buddhist MC/poet Maxi Jazz, indomitably cool club doyenne Sister Bliss and visionary producer Rollo will be bringing their distinctive music to the L.I.V.E concert on July 31
It’s been fourteen years since their debut album “Reverence” took the club world by storm. Now their sixth studio album “The Dance” has gone back to Faithless’s dance floor roots as well as bringing in old friends such as Rollo’s sister Dido, to extend that Faithless energy even further – always passionate, always progressive.

Hot Magazine spoke to Sister Bliss as she looked forward to the Marbella concerts

Hot. We interviewed you last year when you were doing a DJ set at Puro Beach and you hadn’t been to this part of the world before but told us how much you liked it. And now you’re coming back!

Bliss. Last time I was here on my own and it was a little tester. So now I’m bringing the whole gang with me! (laughs) But I am hoping that we get a good crowd and a mixture of both expats and the Spanish for the event, because variety is the spice of life!

Hot. What’s it been like when you have played in Spain before?
Bliss. The reaction has been amazing . We’ve played in Barcelona and Madrid before and we also played at Creamfields in Almeria and the reaction was awesome. There are a lot of passionate fans and there’s a great exploding electronic music scene in Spain so it’s going to be great to be there. We’re playing Ibiza after the Marbella gig so if anyone gets the bug they can come and see us there as well afterwards!
Hot. You played Glastonbury last week and got rave reviews. What was it like?
Bliss . It was just awesome. I’m actually just recovering now in my back garden. It was a brilliant, brilliant show, I nearly cried when I came off stage and Maxi was welling up as well. It was just something very special and we hadn’t played there for eight years. So it was great to come back, and the passion hasn’t diminished - it’s actually grown and the fans have grown as well which is wonderful. We’ve been doing this for 15 years now and so we’re not the flavour of the month!

Hot. The week before that you played at an economic summit in St. Petersburg…
Bliss. Oh my God that was mad! It was little random jaunt by private plane and we ended up being booked to play in front of an audience of world leaders. Imagine that Anrea Merkle getting down…
Who knows who booked us but it was very exciting and a lot of fun! Of course in Russia at this time of year it doesn’t really get dark so we didn’t know when to leave the bar!

Hot. You may find the same thing happening in Marbella
Bliss. Yeah (laughs)

Hot. Your new album “The Dance” is also doing well.
Bliss. The reaction to “The Dance” has been so brilliant that we’re really, really, really happy. The fact that people are going out and buying our records just blows me away. The fact that in this day and age that people are actually buying records anymore! We are always trying to make it better and people are responding to that. We are always trying to keep it fresh – “Mass Destruction” is an anti war protest song which is quite a way from “God is a DJ”.

Hot. What can the fans expect for your first ever gig in Marbella?
Bliss. Our energy, our commitment and our vibe really, I mean what else can we bring but to bring our very best? We always give it everything we’ve got because it’s the fans that have brought the clothes on our backs. I feel very angry when bands say they don’t feel like performing. When you perform you have to give it everything. The people will respond to that, even if every note is not in tune, it’s about your passion and energy and your commitment within the performance and that’s something that Maxi inspires in all of us. And with our fans you very rarely see people give as much as they do. We are given so much love and in return and we just want to pay our respects.
And performing a Kick Ass show is the best way we know how!

Faithless to headline L.I.V.E in Puerto Banus!

International dance superstars Faithless will headline the L.I.V.E event at the Bullring in Puerto Banus on July 31. The concert, organized by Kings of Production, will be the first time that Faithless have played in southern Spain and they will be supported at the event by British Djs including Tall Paul, Platnum and Levi Lewis.

To their millions of fans worldwide, Faithless need no introduction. When this British collective first emerged in the mid-1990s, the idea that a dance music act could produce rich full-length albums rather than one-off tracks, pack out live concerts, and bring together all kinds of genres and music fans, seemed quite revolutionary. Fourteen years, several albums and numerous global tours, festivals and hits later, those Faithless qualities have become benchmarks of the 21st-century music scene. Their sixth studio album The Dance, which is released in May, reunites the central trio of Buddhist MC/poet Maxi Jazz, indomitably cool club doyenne Sister Bliss and visionary producer Rollo, and extends that Faithless energy even further - always passionate, always progressive.

“Essentially, I’ve always been trying to say the same thing: that all human beings have greatness inside of themselves,” says Maxi. “People tend to think that the spiritual and the material world are two separate things. I don’t see it like that. Life is for living, and I’m trying to express something that’s relevant to someone who works five days and parties hard at the weekend. Being in Faithless, I’ve seldom seen more loyal, loving, dedicated and sweet fans. They keep me devoted, and they’re all over the world.”

Money from the event will be going to L.I.V.E. is the Malaga children’s Home “Cuidad de los Ninos”, which home cares for more than 50 children in residence, aged from infants to young adults up to 18 years old.

Tickets for the event are priced from €50 and available from www.ticktackticket.com.

Motorcycle Madness!

It’s the biggest sports event in Spain attracting over 120,000 devotees of all things 2 wheeled to the normally tranquil town of Jerez for a weekend of motorcycle madness.

You really have to question the sanity of whoever came up with the original idea of building a motor racing circuit in Jerez. The place could be described as sleepy at the best of times and until the circuit hosted its first Spanish motorcycle Grand Prix, Jerez was best known for its riding schools and sherry.

All that changed when the motorcycle boys roared into town, closely followed by their cousins in Formula 1. True, the megastars of F1 with their private jets and blackened out motorhomes didn’t return to race after 1997 (The mayor of Jerez, caught up in the excitement of the occasion, and perhaps with just a little too local product inside him, decided to hand out all the prizes at the trophy ceremony, instead of just 3rd like he was supposed to do so. This upset the officials who where waiting behind him and vowed never to come back!), but the heroes of MotoGP loved the place and the fans adored Jerez.

If you’ve never been to a MotoGP in Jerez, a word to the wise. Get up early! There are a few reasons behind this – assuming that you don’t normally spring out of bed with a song in your heart and a gleam in your eye at 6 every Sunday morning. Firstly you want to avoid the Sunday drivers who are either tooteling slowly along the Ruta de Torros, the scenic road up from Algeciras or getting stuck behind a coach of tourists on the way up to Ronda. Nothing is more frustrating than going to watch motorsport where the riders will be racing at over 200kph, while you’re stuck doing 20 behind the Ronda bus.

When you do get up to Jerez, don’t worry about following the signs to the circuit, you’ll be surrounded by bikers - and we’re not talking about hairy arsed Hells Angels here or posers on their Harleys. The guys passing you on either side of the road are sports bikers, wearing brightly coloured racing leathers that wouldn’t look out of place in the paddock. Even the local motorcycle police get into the act, blowing their whistles and waving their arms like demented track marshals.

Once you’ve got into the circuit itself you have a few options available. Buy a baseball cap, T-shirt or flag to declare your allegiance to your favorite rider (Rossi or Lorenzo are safe options) or grab a beer. Rather than the hushed ambience of other sporting events, Jerez is more like a very macho carnival at times. Ladies, if seen at all, tend to be of the pit lane girl that holds the umbrella over the rider while he’s waiting to start the race or the bike bikini bimbo brigade, posing for some PR stunt or other.

Another specialty of the Jerez race is the fireworks. Without doubt, these are the loudest and longest you have ever heard, and it’s a wonder that the US hasn’t targeted Jerez as next in line for weapons of mass destruction. The firecrackers are especially likely to go off at any time from 7am onwards, covering everybody in smoke and accompanied by fino-fuelled cheers.

When the actually business of racing gets underway the first lap is mayhem. It’s a blur of speed and colour as well as smoke and noise (see fireworks above) You, of course will be sitting next to the Rossi fan with the air horn so pack some earplugs, as well as lunch as catering at Jerez is basic. The sheer speed of the motorcycles is awesome. If you’ve seen races on TV, it looks about half the speed when you see and hear them in the flesh, and every corner looks like a controlled crash. Make no mistake; these guys earn their money.

If a Spanish rider wins one of the 3 races (125,250 and 500cc) you’ll be involved in more partying, liquid and, yes, you guessed it, fireworks, than Carnival at Rio. And if the world’s favorite rider, the super talented Italian Valentino Rossi wins, expect unconventional celebrations. One year at Jerez, he stooped on his slowing down lap, got off the bike and made use of the portaloo at the side of the track!

Marbella in Manhattan!

Marbella Mayor Takes Manhattan

Marbella Mayor, Angeles Muñoz and and Councillor of Tourism, Jose Luis Hernandez were in New York last month and took the opportunity to visit the NASDAQ MarketSite in New York City's Times Square to discuss tourism and business opportunities in Marbella. Muñoz , met with potential investors, media and representatives of the tourism sector promoting Golden Mile tourism and the opportunities for investment in Marbella opened up by the PGOU (urban development plan).
‘The time has come to commit ourselves to the external promotion of Marbella as an internationally recognised town that has always attracted foreign investment’ she said.To mark the occasion, Mayor Munoz presided over the NASDAQ Closing Bell!
Marbella residents, however, may have felt that the money would be better spent on filling the potholes in the road, now that the rain has stopped!

Singin' in the Rain!

It may have been the wettest weekend in Puerto Banus for years, but that didn’t dampen the spirits of guests at official opening of Charley’s on March 5.
The stylish and intimate new live music venue was packed and the crowd enjoyed performances from some of the best known performers on the coast.
Managed by Charley Carrigan Caradas, who has quickly become one of the best known personalities in the Port, Charley’s offers a little slice of lounge style away from the sometimes frenetic energy of the jet set marina, and allows guests to relax with a cold drink and some cooler sounds. And with a packed programme of bands booked for the summer, Charley’s will be the place to be this summer!

Cagemania Cancelled

Marbella is not exactly unknown when it comes to liking a good punch up, so we were looking forward to the forthcoming Cagemania, "Carnage on the Costa" ultimate fighting event due to be held at the Hotel Incosol on March 20. However, we heard from the promoters that due to circumstances beyond their control, they've had to cancel the event.

Shame, but if you're in need of a good punch up, we can always recommend some alternative venues!

Marbella's Celeb Couples

Hot Marbella snuggles down with the celebrity couples that have enjoyed a little quality time, Marbella style

Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith

Without doubt the Golden Couple on the coast and easily Malaga’s favourite son, Antonio can do no wrong when it comes to his hometown. Melanie also quickly became a favourite of the Spanish press, even learning a little of the language and appearing on the balcony to watch the Easter processions with their daughter Stella, which Antonio takes part in. Although they spend summers in their villa in Los Monteros, they tend not to get involved in Marbella’s hectic summer social scene, with Antonio prefering to sail his yacht out of Marina Benalmadena. They normally give the press a day at home at the start of the summer, on the condition that they are then left alone. All is not well however, with Melanie recently being treated for her addictions in the US and Antonio reportedly delivering an ultimatum to her.

David and Victoria Beckham

When “El Becks” signed for Real Madrid in 2003 for £24.5m, there was widespread anticipation amongst real estate agents that the couple might base themselves in Marbella. So when David and Victoria were spotted in both Mijas and Puerto Banus, luxury developers whipped themselves into frenzy. After all, they reasoned, David could always commute up to Madrid by private jet from the airport or helicopter from the luxury mansion they were bound to buy in the hills above Marbella. And given Victoria’s love of designer shopping (and the fact that the town has the highest proportion of Essex boys and girls this side of Romford), Puerto Banus would be a perfect destination for her. Alas, David decided that he needed to move to the capital, and the rest (including Rebecca Loos) is history.

Ashley and Cheryl Cole

Cheryl and “Cashley” have long had an affinity with Puerto Banus, and the Ocean Club in particular. I once bumped into most of the England football team around the pool in 2006, the weekend after they had been knocked out of the World Cup by Portugal. I asked one defender what they were doing here and he replied that they were on Ashley’s Stag weekend. “Hang on” I said, “You must have planned this because you only got beaten on Wednesday. Are you telling me that England got knocked out of the World Cup so that you could go to Ashley Cole’s Stag?”

“F… Off” he replied

This was all before the X Factor and Cheryl achieving “National Treasure” status. So when the kiss and tell allegations of Ashley’s drunken night with a blonde hit the headlines it was only natural that he chose to bring here to Puerto Banus for a little retail therapy for his alleged indiscretions. And afterwards they discreetly retired to a lounger at Ocean Club. Just Ashley, Cheryl, a posse of bodyguards and several thousand paparazzi trying to snap them in the VIP area. ..

Dolph and Anette Lundgren

Dolph and Anette first came to Marbella on their honeymoon, although she had been a frequent visitor as a child. What was supposed to be a wine trip and visit to Marrakech turned into a three week stay, and they finally brought a house in 1997. Dolph now splits his time between London, Marbella and LA – where he has just finished shooting “The Expendables” with an all star cast including Sylvester Stallone, Mickey Rourke, Jet Li, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis and the late Britney Murphy.

Dolph was also recently made an “Ambassador for Marbella” by the Town Hall, where he commented “Marbella is a very special place for my family. It’s a marvellous city where we can enjoy life to the full”. The actor also praised the “warmth and hospitality of the people who know how to enjoy life” and we’ve often spotted Dolph and Anette out on the town, doing a little enjoyment of their own!

Noel Gallagher and Meg Matthews

In 1997 Oasis were the biggest band in the world and the media frenzy about the release of their eagerly awaited third album “Be There Now” reached fever pitch before the launch on August 21. To escape the spotlight Noel Gallagher and Meg Mathews, who had married in Vegas earlier that year, fled London to a secret location. While the press spent August combing the south of France and the Caribbean for the couple, they were, in fact, enjoying the sunshine in a villa in the hills above Marbella, with their own personal chef and an “executive concierge” . Noel and Meg had a great time, being visited by an incognito Liam, as well as Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell, and threw several all night dinner parties, while laughing at the Sky TV coverage that wondered where they were. But even though Noel had written the classic “Wonderwall” for Meg, the couple split in 2001.

Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz

OK so “Spain’s most beautiful couple” haven’t been spotted snuggling at Sinatra’s, boogieing down at Buddha Beach or getting up close and personal at the Puente Romano, but it can only be a matter of time surely? And with marriage and or pregnancy rumours a staple of the Spanish Press, you can be sure to hear plenty about Javier and “Pene” over Valentine’s!

I may not be right, but I´m never wrong - James Brown

Here at Hot Marbella we pride ourselves on our tireless dedication to leaving no stone unturned in our quest for justice and the truth etc.

Sometimes in the heat of battle, however, things get a little blurred (especially if we are running low on Red Bull) and mistakes do happen.

So we were delighted to hear from John Flemming who pointed out that

a)Alex Reid´s film is called ¨Killer Babe¨ not ¨Killer Bitch¨

and

b) it´s not a porn film.

Thanks to John for pointing this out, we´ve chained the offending journalist to the wall as punishment and we´ll be eagerly awaiting a DVD for review!

Zero to Hero – and back again?

After winning Celebrity Big Brother and getting back with Katie Price, Alex Reid seemed to have won over the public’s affection. But will it all turn sour again?

It’s one of the most amazing tabloid turnarounds ever. In the run up to Christmas Alex Reid was widely regarded as the biggest plonker in Britain. But having emerged from the Celebrity Big Brother house as this year's unlikely winner, the cross-dressing cage fighter has somehow managed to win back the public.

Back in summer this didn’t seem possible. Alex was very much the “other man” and when he and Katie Price visited Marbella twice last summer and while they were photographed getting personal in the pool, Peter Andre stayed in the UK with the kids. The “Team Pete” crowd grew louder and louder in their condemnation of Alex and when it was revealed that Alex was a professional cage fighter who had also appeared a porn film called “Killer Bitch, the public zeroed in on him and Katie as the most hated couple in Britain. To rub salt into the wounds, Peter turned up in Marbella a few weeks later with the kids and was the perfect father in front of an adoring paparazzi.

Back in the UK Alex was the subject of further humiliation when he turned up to Katie’s Halloween party in a transvestite outfit complete with lipstick and stockings, and when she dumped him live on air after leaving the “I'm A Celebrity” jungle in December, his days in the limelight looked over
So it wasn’t entirely surprising that when Alex entered the Big Brother house in January, the crowd booed him. "This is why I'm here," he told Davina. "To change these boos to hopefully cheers."

His first test was coming face-to-face with Katie's ex Dane Bowers, who to Alex's surprise was about to be his roommate for the next three weeks. Dane had a black eye after a fight at New Year's Eve party at Katie's house, which both men had attended. Initial reports suggested that Alex was behind the attack, but he and Dane denied the claim in a joint statement. Nonetheless, discovering the ex-boyband star in the Big Brother house must have been a shock for 'The Reidernater'. But rather than arguing with Dane - which Channel 4 producers must have hoped for - Alex gave him a big hug and the pair immediately started cracking jokes.

And rather than being the first voted out of the house, Alex was soon being offered advice and home truths from Vinnie Jones, Stephanie Beacham and Stephen Baldwin which he seemed to be taking on board. Vinnie even criticised his bid for movie stardom. "No one would want to be in a movie with you at the moment - no one would want to be associated with you," Vinnie said. "If you offered me five million dollars to be in a movie with you, I wouldn't take it."

Alex also showed a willingness to make fun of himself (the all over fake body tan springs to mind),surprisingly went on to win Celebrity Big Brother with a whopping 60% of the final vote, which apparently had Vinnie “gutted’.

There's little doubt Alex's time on the Channel 4 show mellowed him. During one of his last meals in the house, Alex described the experience as an "emotional rollercoaster". "I can act like a plonker sometimes," he told housemates. "But maybe I have grown up."

Maybe he has, but within a week of emerging from the BB House, Alex was back with Katie and they were both telling OK magazine of their wedding plans I wish I’d met Alex six years ago. He’s perfect in every way. He’s a proper gentleman” she gushed while Alex said “I need Katie. I don’t need her for fame but I need her. It has been a fantastic start to the New Year and it’s going to be even more fantastic now this is happening”

The couple then headed out to Las Vegas, world capital of the quickie wedding, and were married within hours of arriving in a private ceremony at the luxurious Wynn Hotel, and a multi million pound deal for photos of their wedding was rumoured to be in discussion. And just to add more drama the couple’s trip reportedly enraged Peter, who thought that Katie would be looking after the kids this week. 'It's absolutely outrageous the way she behaves with the kids sometimes,' a source told The Sun. 'They are an afterthought. Kate was meant to pick them up after school yesterday but word filtered back that she was on her way to Heathrow for a flight and the nannies would be looking after the kids all week. Pete hit the roof.” Later though, he had calmed down and told Radio One “I’ve thought about this, all of this morning, and I thought as long as they’re a positive influence on my kids that’s all I care about. If they’re happy great, it’s none of my business.”

Alex may have gone from zero to hero, but watch this space. He could be back to zero by the end of the month!

Morgan's Marbella

Marbella was glued to its TV screens when Piers Morgan’s long awaited documentary finally aired on ITV. Previous shows about the town have not portrayed Marbella in the most flattering of lights – Costa del Dosh and the infamous Marbella Belles spring most readily to mind – and they all seem to underline the point that people gain 10 kilos and lose 1000 points of IQ whenever a camera crew shows up. And as one of the UK’s most recognisable and controversial figures (you either like him or loathe him. Just ask Jeremy Clarkson) viewers must have wondered if Piers was out to do a hatchet job on the town.

The fabulous opening shots of Marbella, swooping in low on a helicopter over the Mediterranean towards Puerto Banus reminded us of just how stunning Marbella really can be. As he cruised along the Golden Mile in an open top Ferrari, Piers pointed out the Marbella Club Hotel and the Saudi Royal Family’s Palace, before pointing out an infamous landmark, Milady Palace. The sleaze alarms in the Hot Marbella offices went off, as we braced ourselves, expecting Piers to go down the lap dance and alternative nightclub route

Instead Piers’ first stop was the fantastically luxurious beachfront estate of a man who he described as a “Peer of the Realm who is worth more money than the Queen” (so that ruled out Lord Sugar) The fabulous residence, complete with four bedroom guest villa, was available for a mere £20,000 a day in the high season.

After a spot of shopping with Karen Brady in Puerto Banus, where his reaction to the €16,000 price tag for a handbag was hilarious, Piers popped into long term Marbella residents Graham and Barbara Fisher’s villa in the exclusive La Zagaletta estate.

Piers finally touched on the subject of crime and corruption, taking a tour of the Golf Valley and pointing out some of the bars and restaurants that had been the scenes of shootings, before quizzing “local crime journalist and author” Wensley Clarkson on the crime situation. Although how someone who apparently lives near Granada, claimed that there was a recent fatal shooting in a hairdressers carried out by Russians (it was French Algerians in 2004) and then plucked the figure “Sixty to seventy per cent of new build developments came from black money” out of thin air, could call themselves an expert escaped us, especially when he called Marbella the “centre of criminality”. The man has obviously never been to Moss Side…

And we liked Piers’ reply to the perma tanned couple who were defending the corrupt Marbella mayors for dealing with petty crime with the brilliant put down “Even Saddam Hussein had his moments”

Back in Banus Piers met with a relaxed Wayne Lineker, and spent an evening at Banus’ busiest bar (they get through 15,000 a weekend) and Piers admitted that it looked good fun, until someone waved a blow up doll at him! After a quick lap around Race Resort Ascari and tea with Max Clifford, Piers headed to Olivia Valere’s nightclub where he was regally received by the Grand Dame of the Marbella nightclub scene. Having namedropped Bruce Willis and Prince Harry, and shown Piers a €30,000 bottle of champagne, she came out with the eyebrow raising comment “I don’t like to be near poor people because it might be catching”

There was more champagne when Piers interviewed the totally pointless bimbo Bianca Gascoigne at the champagne spraying party at Nikki Beach, (“You can’t drink all the champagne so you might as well spray it” she prattled) and with a millionaire from the north east of England who had retired to his yacht in Banus. “What has Marbella got that Sunderland hasn’t” asked Piers.

Perhaps the “Work, rest and play, but I haven’t seen anyone working or resting” atmosphere was starting to rub off on Piers when he popped into Polo House to see James Hewitt. For those of you who are unaware of their previous history, when he was editor of The Mirror Piers demanded to have James tried for treason for sleeping with the wife of the future King. But the two seemed to get on well for the cameras at least, taking gentle digs at each other.

So Morgan on Marbella wasn’t the horror show that we were all dreading, and at the end we had the sneaking suspicion that Piers had perhaps fallen a little in love with the town. “Marbella, whatever tickles your fancy” he summed up “has it all!”

Sneak Preview - Future Fashion

We don't normally do sneak previews for our forthcoming issue, but we felt that the photo from Issue 10s fashion feature deserved to see the light of day a little early. The photos were shot at the fabulous Domosat showrooms and feature Marbella It Girl winner, Hayley O Brien, who is also our cover girl. Look out for Issue 10 this weekend!

Happy New Year!

Just a quick post to wish you all the best for 2010. First reports back from last night in Puerto Banus indicate that Lineker's was one the hottest places to be, and that seeing in the New Year at private house parties was also a big thing. Helps if you've got a huge villa, of course...

The fireworks were taken from the editor's balcony, by the way. He's not to be trusted around naked flames on his own!
